Eastern Sakakawea Recreation Report
April 25 2008
Patricia Stockdill
Welcome to a new feature on the Indian Hills Web site, the Eastern Sakakawea Recreation Report. Check out what’s happening on the Big Lake, lake elevation, Garrison Dam releases, and inflows from Missouri River System tributaries – and fishing, of course – all in one easy location:
*Indian Hills Resort: Lake Sakakawea’s elevation on April 25 was 1,807.5 feet above mean sea level. Work is underway on the low water boat ramp so anglers will have access when the resort opens in May. For now, though, wind and cool temperatures continues keeping anglers off the water.
*Van Hook: Fishing activity is generally quiet in the Big Lake’s midsection.
*Garrison: Moving farther east on Lake Sakakawea, anglers are finding a little northern pike success from shore. Again, there isn’t a lot of fishing pressure because of the weather.
*Pick City: The south shore also has some northern pike activity and there’s even a few catfish mixed in.
North Dakota Rivers Report, featuring Lake Sakakawea’s two major tributaries:
*Missouri River: Garrison Dam average daily discharge is 13,100 cubic feet per second (cfs)
*Yellowstone River, Cartwright: Streamflow data wasn’t available but the river stage is 63.15 feet
*Little Missouri River, Long X Bridge: The streamflow average is 60 cfs while river stage at the bridge is 1.55 feet.
